Report: Red Sox to sign Miller
    By Boston.com Staff | December 22, 2004

The Red Sox have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with former Astros pitcher Wade Miller, according to a report on ESPN.com.

Miller reportedly passed a physical exam today in Boston and agreed to a contract with a $1.5 million base salary and $3 million in incentives. Agent Bob Garber said the deal will be finalized on Thursday.

Miller was 7-7 with a 3.35 ERA in 15 starts this year before being sidelined for the season June 29 because of a rotator cuff injury. In his first two full seasons for the Astros, Miller was 31-12 in 2001 and 2002. He then pitched through right forearm pain in 2003, but still was 14-13 with a 4.13 ERA in 33 starts.

He became a free agent Tuesday when he was not offered a contract Monday night. The Sox and Astros had discussions about him at the winter meetings.

Garber told ESPN.com he expects Miller to be ready to pitch by Opening Day. If that's the case, Miller will join Curt Schilling and new free-agent signees David Wells and Matt Clement at the top of a revamped Boston rotation.

    Good deal for Boston.

I just read this on the Red Sox website, and I think its an awesome deal, if he can stay healthy, the Sox got a bargain.

That's a big IF with Miller. He has great velocity and good movment on his pitchers, he just can't seem to finish a season.

Hopefully he can shake the injuries and be the shutdown pitcher he's shown he can be at times.
